DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS
LAUNCHES TEA AT 3 AT MAXIM’S
New Series Presents High Tea, Uncommon
Entertainment
Tea at 3, the Chicago Department of
Cultural Affairs’ new series at Maxim’s: The
Nancy Goldberg International Center, will
present a glamorous afternoon of high tea
and uncommon entertainment every month.
The series will kick off in July with a men’s
fashion show with celebrity models, and
will offer beyond-the-ordinary
entertainment in Maxim's elegant dining
room. Maxim’s: The Nancy Goldberg
International Center is located at 24 E.
Goethe Street. Tickets for Tea at 3 cost
$25; reservations may be made online at
www.MaximsChicago.org or at the Cultural
Affairs box office at 312.742.TIXS (8497).
“We wanted to invite the neighborhood
Maxim’s, so we created this daytime
program with varied entertainment,” said
Lois Weisberg, Commissioner of the
Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. “Of
course, everyone who enjoys good
entertainment and high tea is welcome.”
Each event will begin with a tea tasting, as
TeaGschwendner's sommelier Sam
Ritchey introduces that day's special teas.
The selections will include a traditional
black tea and a caffeine-free or herbal tea.
Tea sandwiches, cookies, cheese and fruit
will also be served, before the
entertainment.
Tea at 3 kicked off on July 13 at 3 pm with a
preview of the Fall 2010 menswear line
from Syd Jerome, one of the top menswear
stores in the world. Guests were surprised
to see who appeared next on the runway as
Chicago celebrities and notables —
including Rick Kogan (Chicago Tribune and
WGN Radio) and Arny Granat (founder of
Jam Productions) — model suits, sport
coats and sportswear coats from the finest
clothing lines, such as Armani, Zegna and
Brioni. Described by the Wall Street
Journal as “the house of power suits,” Syd
Jerome has been catering to discerning
men who appreciate the finest in fashion,
quality and superb service since 1958.
Other Tea at 3 programs will include:
Where Are My Keys? with Judy
Marcus
Tuesday, August 10, 3 pm
Judy Marcus, “the Memory Lady,” makes
remembering unforgettable. Say good-bye
to being a “scatterbrain” and say hello to a
great memory! Guests will laugh as they
learn brain-friendly lifestyle strategies to
clear away the cobwebs, increase your
mental energy, and remember everything
they choose to remember, instantly, upon
demand, such as names, ideas, where you
parked your car. Author of Where Are My
Keys?®, creator of the LOVE Memory
Method®, and member of the National
Speaker’s Association, Judy’s powerful
lessons for business and every-day life are
easy to learn, fun to do, habit forming, and
best of all – they work.
An Afternoon with Hollie
Himmelman
Tuesday, September 14, 3 pm
Comedian Hollie Himmelman likes to share
stories of her neurotic upbringing along
with her twisted observational perspective
on many topics. Born and raised in the
Chicago area, Hollie finally realized what
she wanted to be and didn’t even have to
grow up. She defines her relatable
experiences with sarcasm and clever
sardonic wit. Studying acting and comedy
in L.A. and Chicago, Hollie’s training
includes The Second City and Zanies. She
has performed throughout the Midwest and
in New York. Hollie has also performed in
and produced several comedy shows.
When Hollie is not working, she spends
time raising a husband and four dogs. She
notes that at least the dogs can be trained.

TeaGschwendner is a German teashop in
Chicago's Gold Coast and the world's
largest specialty tea retailer. Albert
Gschwender opened his first small teashop
in 1979 with a simple idea: to share the very
best teas with a small, select circle of
connoisseurs. Today the company has
stores ― each one carrying more than 250
teas ― in nine countries across four
continents. TeaGschwendner's sommelier
Sam Ritchey is a self-described
ambassador for tea, sharing his passion
one cup at a time with those curious about
the most popular drink on the planet.
Traveling far and wide in the name of tea,
Mr. Ritchey has visited gardens in Nepal,
India, Brazil and Japan, engaging with
dozens of artisanal teamakers along the
way.
Maxim’s: the Nancy Goldberg International
Center is a one-of-a-kind location in the
heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast. Originally
built as a duplicate of the famous
restaurant in Paris, Maxim’s is a treasure
of art nouveau décor with its plush red
banquettes, glistening inlays of brass and
stained glass, and rich mahogany paneling
and scroll work. Now operated as a
meeting and reception venue by the
Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the
department presents three unique
entertainment series in Maxim’s intimate
and elegant dining room: Tea at 3, Play On
Cabaret, and Live at Maxim’s with Rick
Kogan, which is on hiatus until October.
The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs
is dedicated to promoting an ongoing
celebration of the arts and supporting the
people who create and sustain them.
Offering more than 2,000 free cultural
programs each year including exhibitions
and performances at venues like
Millennium Park and the Chicago Cultural
Center, DCA supports the work of artists
and cultural institutions in every community
and affirms the value of the arts to the
social and economic vibrancy of the city.
It was a lovely afternoon brought together
with friends and neighbors to share the timid
modeling that blossomed into celebrity statis
on their second walk into the audience of
admiring guests.
The business and casual fashions from Syd
Jerome were appreciated by the "models" as
well as onlookers. One could almost
imagine their significant other wearing each
gentlemens choice.
I highly recommend attending future teas for
an exquisite afternoon!
